Abstract

We observe currently an increased manifestation about music studies in Colonial Brazil and after the arrival of the Portuguese Royal Family in 1808. But the informations are still reduced regarding dramatic music. In this communication, we try to elucidate historiographic aspects based on recent and documented studies, organizing information about theaters in activity in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century in Rio de Janeiro. Trough the life and career of the singer Joaquina Lapinha, we try to understand social and musical aspects of the period. We also emphasize the importance of the musical collection in the Library of the Ducal Palace in Vila Viçosa, Portugal, according to recent researches related to Brazil.
