100 years of Max Rostal

Thisarticle celebrates the 100 th birthdayof Max Rostal, one oftheleading pedagoguesand violinistsof the twentieth century. A brief history of his life and work is followed by the transcription of part of a lecture titled: “What happened after Flesch?”, given in 1980 during ESTA (European String Teachers Association)’s annual meeting in Holland by Berta Volmer. Volmer, a former assistant of Rostal in Cologne (Germany), analyses his pedagogical contributionin continuing and perfecting Flesch’sapproachto musicandviolin technique.It includes commentsabout the lecture with the most important topics analyzed in more details.
