This article aims to understand how teachers conceive the teaching work in Higher Education, analyzing the activities developed in the daily life of different private institutions of the Agreste of Pernambuco. The research involved 22 professors from undergraduate courses who answered a questionnaire, composed of open-ended and closed-ended questions. The results revealed that teachers feel satisfied with their work and their profession and see the teaching work as challenging, motivating, enjoyable and of social relevance. At the same time, they highlight the various challenges faced by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and their professionals, especially those related to the student profile. The picture that is presented in relation to the teaching work is ambiguous, because there is on the one hand a sense of well-being, at the same time that the work is challenging and limited.
