Abstract

In this paper, we reviewed the book “Foreign Policy Analysis: a Toolbox”, authored by the political science professors Jean-Frederic Morin and Jonathan Paquin. This work, which introduces students to the field of Foreign Policy Analysis, was thought as a “toolbox” from which students and researchers may take references, ideas, and concepts that will aid them in their research. The book contains ten chapters, and it presents a series of theories concerning decision-makers, bureaucratic actors, political institutions, social actors, rationality, culture, and the structure of the international system. We noticed the lack of detailing in regard to specific foreign policy theories and authors - which could have been contextualized in a better way -, as well as deeper discussions about case studies - which could have been better explored, as the field of foreign policy analysis contains many of such studies. Nevertheless, we believe the authors were successful in presenting a wide variety of theories and approaches - in fact, more theories we present than one would expect from an introductory textbook. This allows students of International Relations and Foreign Policy to extend their view concerning how this field is scientifically studied. We believe this textbook is a valuable teaching aid or coursebook for foreign policy analysis classes in Political Science or International Relations programs.
