Abstract

The article examines Akira Kurosawa’s film Rashomon, exploring the triad of life, thought, and truth through the "Rashomon effect," where multiple subjective accounts of the same criminal event are presented as irreconcilable. The author connects this narrative to Hegelian philosophy, emphasizing the dialectic between subjective spirit (lived experiences), objective spirit (institutional judgment), and absolute spirit (philosophical reflection). Kurosawa reveals how truth is obscured by selfish perspectives and contradictions but suggests that ethics and redemptive action – embodied in the woodcutter who adopts an abandoned child – restore human credibility. The analysis underscores that truth cannot be separated from goodness, aligning with Hegel’s systemic view, where philosophy, art, and ethics converge to overcome subjective fragmentation. The film also critiques traditional honor codes and reflects post-war Japan’s context, symbolized by rain and moral reconstruction.
