Abstract
In the history of the Olympic Games in the modern era, the 11th. edition, held in Berlin under Third Reich rule, is the greatest example of how Olympism succumbed to the seduction of totalitarianism. This article aims to present the State's involvement in the elaboration and execution of the Olympic Ceremony, for the purposes of ideological propaganda. This is a bibliographical and documentary research, based both on historical references and on documentation referring to “press instructions” (Presseanweisungen) issued daily by the Ministry of Popular Education and Propaganda, as instruments of prior censorship, and on published materials in the newspapers Der Angriff and Völkischer Beobachter. The main focus will be on the Olympic Torch Relay (Fackelstaffellauf) designed by the GOC (German Olympic Committee) for that edition and incorporated by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) into the Olympic Protocol for subsequent editions.
