Tiny Objects, Great Discussions The Construction of Representations on Pelé Through Mozambican Postage Stamps

Abstract

Aiming to study the representations on Pelé through postage stamps from Mozambique, this paper appears as a confluence point between two topics that have aroused growing interest in researches: the construction of the image of Pelé – a process that receives more attention by Brazilian studies since the beginning of this century – and the symbolic potential of the postage stamps – materials that over the same period began to be treated more widely as a source of evidence by historians, geographers, sociologists, and anthropologists. By suggesting that Mozambican postage stamps act on the dilemmas and conflicts that mark Pelé’s image, the analysis allows the contesting of the vision that the stamps that would not have an apparent relationship with the national history, the cultural heritage, the local people, and the political interests of the issuing State would be symbolically empty and communicatively fragile.
