Abstract

This work was presented, in a condensed version, at the Fourteenth Meeting of the National Association for Research and Graduate Studies in Music, in Porto Alegre. The author is grateful to Elizabeth Wood for her reading and comments. Whether it is “art music” or “ethnic music,” most of the entries related to Brazil—except for those dedicated to great pianists—are authored by an ethnomusicologist. This clearly places the country outside the boundaries of “the West” and suggests that, while Grove moves forward, there are zones of friction, and not all of it progresses at the same pace.
