The present study is an inquiry, based on the semiotic theory of Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914), about the possible meanings that can be extracted from the piece De Umbris, for two bassoons and piano, composed in 1992 by Oiliam Lanna. The horizon of this science is very broad, touching different areas of human knowledge (psychoanalysis, literature, music, etc.). The musical reference, one of the foci of the theory, was the one chosen for the analysis of De Umbris. Musical reference refers to the way in which the sign relates to its respective object, its semantics. The initial impressions about the piece were associated with the concepts of Peirce regarding icon, index and symbol and this approach resulted in new interpretations of the discourse. It is hoped that this attempt at applying the semiotic theory in musical analysis will yield good fruits and provoke the interest of other performers in finding new approaches of the musical discourse.
