Abstract

This article focuses on Didactic Audiovisual Translation (DAT) as a useful tool for teaching Spanish as a second foreign language, using the modality of Subtitling for the Deaf and the Hard-of-Hearing (SDH) for didactic purposes. The main objective is to present the results obtained in the framework of the InnoDAT project to demonstrate the possibility of contributing to the improvement of language skills (oral and written comprehension and oral and written expression) through DAT by means of the implementation of six learning units (LUs) based on subtitling for the deaf. For this research, the methodology of the TRADILEX project was used and the study was carried out at the Università Ca' Foscari (Venice) with 133 participants, one part of the sample being students of the Degree in Linguistic and Cultural Mediation and the other part students of the Master's Degree in Translation and Interpreting. The data collected in this research on communicative skills are quantitative and were subsequently analysed with the SPSS statistical analysis programme. The results obtained show positive values in terms of the improvement of each of the communicative language skills. The discussion corroborates these positive data and, in conclusion, this study provides the educational community with real statistics on active and innovative practices to improve linguistic communication competence, leaving open the possibility of using other languages and other modalities of DAT for future research.

Noemi Fraga-Castrillón, Ciencias de la Educación, Departamento de Didácticas Específicas y Métodos de Investigación y Diagnóstico en Educación, A Coruña, España

Noemi Fraga Castrillón has a degree in Primary Education and a master’s degree in Research and Innovation in Specific Didactics. She presented several communications on the study of the teaching-learning of foreign languages and a proposal for textual transpodidactics at international conferences, as well as publishing an article in several journals such as Languages, PortaLinguarum and DIGILEC and a book chapter about English Corner in the IGI-Global editorial. She is currently a member of the DILEC group at the UDC as a doctoral student and is working on her thesis about the learning of Spanish as a second foreign language in an Italian-speaking context through Subtitling for the Deaf.

Dr. Pilar Couto-Cantero is a Faculty Member and full-time lecturer at UDC (North-Western Spain). She has been the Modern Languages Coordinator in the Postgraduate and Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) (2010-2015).  Head of the Teaching and Learning Modern Languages Department (2014-2017). Licenciado en Traducción e Interpretación por la Universidad de Bolonia, Giuseppe Trovato es doctor internacional (Doctor Europaeus) por la Escuela Internacional de Doctorado de la Universidad de Murcia con una Tesis sobre mediación lingüística entre lenguas afines (español-italiano) y Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado 2016. Una parte de su Tesis doctoral se publicó en la colección de ArcoLibros dirigida por Moreno Fernández (Cuadernos de Didáctica de ELE): Mediación lingüística y enseñanza de español/LE (2016).

Participa regularmente en las actividades de grupos de investigación internacionales (Universidades de Málaga, La Coruña, Alicante, Valladolid) en el marco de la lengua española y la traducción y también en proyectos de innovación docente. Colabora con revistas nacionales e internacionales como miembro del comité científico / editorial y como evaluador de artículos.

A partir del curso académico 2009-2010 ha impartido docencia en el área de lengua española y traducción en varias universidades italianas. También ha dado clases de literatura española y teoría de la traducción. Su actividad didáctica se ha desplegado asimismo en el contexto universitario español e hispanoamericano, en el que ha impartido docencia en cursos de grado, máster y doctorado en calidad de profesor invitado (Málaga, Murcia, La Rioja, Alicante, Londres, Colombia).

Además, ha sido nombrado como evaluador de tesis doctorales, miembro de tribunales de tesis doctorales en España y América Latina y de proyectos de investigación de carácter internacional.

Sus líneas de trabajo se enmarcan en varios ámbitos de investigación: la traductología analizada tanto desde la perspectiva de la oralidad como de la de la escritura; la mediación lingüística y cultural; la lingüística contrastiva de español e italiano; la lingüística aplicada a la enseñanza de ELE; la lengua y la traducción en el ámbito del turismo; la didáctica de la lengua y la literatura española; la pedagogía de la traducción español-italiano; la pedagogía de la traducción especializada español-italiano; la traducción especializada y literaria. Recientemente sus intereses se están desplazando hacia la relación existente entre el fenómeno fraseológico y la práctica traductora, el papel de la variación lingüística y de los repertorios lexicográficos monolingües y bilingües en relación con la traductología.
