Analogías entre Stuart Saunders Smith y los trascendentalistas

La vida y la obra del compositor norteamericano Stuart Saunders Smith (1948) han mostrado aspectos que recuerdan al movimiento filosófico del siglo XIX conocido como Trascendentalismo de Nueva Inglaterra. Aquí analizo cómo las ideas divulgadas por el Trascendentalismo y las filosofías trascendentalistas, en particular la unidad, el librepensamiento, el antimaterialismo, el antitecnologismo y el silencio, se reflejan en las posturas vitales y el proceso compositivo de Smith. Basándose en la creencia de que la unidad une a todos los seres vivos a través de un alma universal, Smith intenta unificar simbólicamente a compositor, intérprete y público mediante el uso del silencio y una técnica compositiva llamada coexistencia. A su vez, el antimaterialismo y el antitecnologismo se manifiestan musicalmente en su frugal uso de la instrumentación y en su negativa a escribir para la electrónica evocando temas naturalistas, respectivamente.
