Use of simulations in nursing education

OBJECTIVE: To understand how simulation has been used in nursing education. METHOD: This work is an integrative review of prior literature published between 2008 and 2012. Of the 1,837 studies found, 54 were selected for analysis. RESULTS: The studies were distributed in 31 journals. The year 2010 presented the highest number of articles, most of which were published in the United States. Three main categories emerged from this analysis: simulation uses different types of simulators; simulation is used to develop different skills; and clinical simulation is more than the simple use of a simulator. DISCUSSION: Different types of simulators are used in nursing education for the development of various competences. Simulation goes beyond the simple use of the simulator and involves strategies, techniques, processes, and tools. CONCLUSION: the use of simulation in nursing education has gained ground as an active teaching methodology that offers safe, experience-based learning.Downloads
