The aim of the present study is to evaluate the way Family Health Strategy (in Portuguese, Estratégia de Saúde da Família-ESF) professionals understand the concepts of health promotion and intersectionality. It is a qualitative exploratory descriptive study conducted with two ESF teams (8 individuals) from rural and urban areas between August and September 2010. Health promotion was considered as a series of actions developed by health education and aiming at preventing illnesses and at empowering the population. "Intersectionality" was cited in different occasions, but the concept was not fully used as most actions were planned by a single sector to be implemented on another. The use of such concepts helps the health professionals to face their uncertainties and fears, and sheds light on old challenges.Downloads
