Abstract

This study intended to verify, through colostomized patients, how the education process is run during the hospitalization period. The investigation under the form of group intervention was carried out with colostomized patients enrolled in a multi-disciplinary care program, through a semi-structured interview. The data were analyzed according to the assumptions of thematic analysis proposed by Freire (11). The results showed that the education process occurs in a decontextualized way, not allowing the active participation by the patients. This importance of the educational activity by the nurse for the colostomized patients was shown, enabling them to become aware of the situation they are living, the recognition of the need to develop skills for self-care, in order to guarantee their independence and autonomy in this new way of living.
