Reliability analysis of the Musical Communicativeness Scale

Abstract

The Musical Communicativeness Scale was developed through research carried out in the United States of America in the 1960s. Since then, it has been used to assess behavior based on sound and musical stimuli. In Brazil, it was submitted to validate studies with positive results. This study aimed to verify its reliability in two approaches to music therapy. Hence, 5 examiners analyzed 24 excerpts of videos, being 12 excerpts from consultations in Music Centered Music Therapy and 12 excerpts from videos in Neurological Music Therapy. Subsequently, the Spearman Correlation Test was performed. The results showed moderate and strong correlations, indicating evidence of reliability for this scale.

She is a doctoral student in Music at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), has a master's degree in Music from UFMG, has a specialization in Music Education from the Venda Nova do Imigrante University (FAVENI) and a bachelor's degree in Music - Music Therapy from UFMG. She participated in research on the following topics: care protocol, evaluation protocol, autism spectrum disorder, neurological pathologies, improvisational music therapy, neurological music therapy and Nordoff Robbins Scales.

Cristiano Mauro Assis Gomes, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil

He is Psychologist, Doctor in Education, Post-Doctor in Educational Psychology. Coordinator of the Cognitive Architecture Research Laboratory (LAICO). Professor at the Department of Psychology, the Graduate Program in Psychology, Cognition and Behavior and the Graduate Program in Neuroscience at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. He works mainly on the following themes: Psychometrics and Machine Learning, analysis of large-scale educational databases, research on architecture and cognitive development, construction and validation of psychological and educational measurement instruments, intervention and cognitive development.
