The Orchestral Music of the Viceroyalty of New Spain constitutes one of the aspects of Mexico’s Art History that until now has not been brought to light by specialized publications. This paper presents some of the research advances around this cultural and artistic phenomena obtained by the author during almost a decade. This work places the inaugural period of the Symphonic Movement in the Viceroyalty and points to its principal protagonists. The relationship between different genders for instrumental ensembles with the cathedral, theatrical and palatial environments and the specific functions in each of them are established with the help of authentic primary sources, mostly not published, contributes to the understanding of the meanings and social roles that the Orchestral Music in the 18th Century had in New Spain, Spain and in other Latin American Countries.
