Diagrams in art criticism
A close reading of Rosalind Krauss’ structuralist squares

This article reviews the three uses of “expanded field” by Rosalind Krauss, related respectively to the modern sculpture, the modernist painting and the medium. To do so, it interweaves some of Krauss’ texts, observing her shift of focus from the expanded field to the white cube. This reading exercise responds directly to the phenomenon of increasing appropriation of the “expanded field” in Brazilian recent artistic debates, seeking an adequate understanding of the uses of the structuralist square made by Rosalind Krauss.
