QUACKENBOS AS AN ANTIDOTE TO ORTIZ & PARDAL
TEACHING PORTUGUESE GRAMMAR IN THE OPINION OF RUY BARBOSA, 1882
Keywords:

The purpose of this article is to contribute to the already advanced research, in Brazil, regarding the intuitive method. Two books cited by Ruy Barbosa in his Opinion (1882) on primary education in the Municipality of Court are examined: Illustrated lessons in our lenguage by George Payn Quackenbo which was recommended by Barbosa as an antidote to Grammatica analytica e explicativa da língua portugueza, by Ortiz and Pardal, in circulation in the 1870s and 1880s, especially in primary schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro. About Grammatica analytica, stands out its organization based on the concept of grammar as the art of writing and speaking well, which denotes its affiliation to the general and philosophical Greek-Latin model, therefore, its mismatch with the scientific renewal that was taking place in Linguistics in the 19th century. For contextualized presentation of Illustrated lessons ... - and considering that its author has not yet received studies in Brazil on teaching grammar, composition and adjacent areas, and on the intuitive method -, the article situates this book in relation to other publications de Quackenbos, as well as his intellectual roots in the Scottish “enlightenment” and his declared adherence to object lessons. Thus, it is possible to verify a reasonably high degree of consistency in the criticisms that Ruy Barbosa conducts against the linguistic conservatism present in the on primary education in the Municipality of Court, and its relevance in relation to the more recent studies that base new pedagogical proposals, said to be modern.
