In this paper, we highlight some of the main concerns in mathematics education research related to the use of information and communications technology. The discussion presented here is primarily the result of reflection on the various studies carried out by member of our research group, GPIMEN. We sought to contemplate the studies that deal with epistemological questions, pedagogical proposals, teachers, and distance education. Our analysis is based on the notions that knowledge is produced by humans-with-media, i. e., by humans and non-humans, and those who intend to deal with information and communications technologies within the educational landscape need to move constantly between the comfort zone and the risk zone.
