The approximately 610 cardboard boxes that compose Andy Warhol's Time Capsules (1974-
1987) constitute an object that is difficult to categorize historiographically and museologically. Opened shortly after the author's death, they constitute what in this text is
called a compulsory interactive work, i.e. a work that, despite its title and in the absence of
any explicit directives from Warhol, ended up being subjected to a scrutiny and manipulation very different from that usually reserved for works of art. Against this content-oriented approach, which alleges the need for a premature opening of the boxes and a census of their interiors, it is argued that the most powerful thing about this work would have been the maintenance of its inaugural gesture of obliteration and concealment of the objects.
